what hairstyle suits me?

Google displays over 110 million results for this telltale question. While, quite literally, millions of blog posts claim there’s a magic formula for finding the hairstyle that best suits you, there really isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.

Everyone is uniquely beautiful and uniquely themselves. What one hairstyle looks like on one person may look completely different on another. It’s the individuals energy that embodies the hairstyle and brings it to life!

Hairstyles can also evolve with your age. For instance, you strongly disliked having bangs when you were younger, but as you have entered a new era in your life, you’re loving them.

Below are 5 non-traditional tips for discovering which hairstyle(s) suit you!

1. Consider your lifestyle.

Do you spend a good amount of time outdoors, or are you a homebody? What’re your working conditions? Do you exercise frequently? How much time do you want to devote to hair care?

These are all questions to ask yourself when thinking about the logistics of having particular hairstyles.

If you’re someone who works a desk job in the AC, you don’t have to worry about putting your hair up, such as someone who works in food service.

If you are constantly putting your hair back for working out, you may not want to deal with bangs.

If you don’t have much time to devote to styling your hair in the morning because of being a new mother, you probably don’t want a hairstyle that requires much effort.

These are a few examples of how your lifestyle should be a factor when deciding your next hairstyle!

2. Match your personality.

Who you are as an individual should be reflected with your hairstyle… because why not?! You hair being an outlet for creative expression changes the game when it comes to trying out different hairstyles.

How do you want your public canvas to be viewed each day? Which hairstyle will match your vibe, fashion, mood, etc.?

We all know what it feels like to have a special connection with certain hairstyles. Conversely, we know what it feels like to have a bad connection with certain hairstyles.

Monitor how your hairstyle makes you feel. This will be a good indictor of whether this is a hairstyle that best suits you!

3. Dare to be bold.

Coloring inside in the lines may look always look nice, but how boring?!
Experiment with various hairstyles to see what options you have to choose from, instead of sticking to the same old, same old.

If this endeavor scares you, ask a friend (or your stylist!) for moral support and recommendations.

You’re not in this alone. Hair decisions are BIG decisions, but so worth the risk sometimes!

4. Take inspiration from others.

While you’re out and about in the real world, pay attention to other’s hairstyles to see what strikes your fancy.

Occasionally, you just meet someone and are so drawn to their hairstyle you can’t help but ask where they get their hair done. Be mindful of these people for future hair inspo!

Take advantage of the internet (especially Pinterest!) for searching through hairstyle ideas over the years and today.

Because history repeats itself with what hairstyles are trending, don’t limit yourself to what’s popular today. Choose a hairstyle that best suits you; because if it’s not trending now, it will be eventually, or again!

5. Rate your experience with past hairstyles.

Evaluate the pros and cons of all of your previous hairstyles to aid with the decision of what hairstyle you want now.

You’ll find there are specific things you will never do again, specific things you would try again, and specific things you might try again. For example, you’ll never get a pixie again, you’d try a short bob again, and you might try choppy layers again.

Learn from your experiences and use them to positively influence your hair choices in the present and future!
